    Remote workers are also called virtual teams. They can be an excellent resource for business. This is because teams can be comprised of members who have the talent and expertise that may not be available within the company, the same city, or the same time zone. However, effectively managing remote teams can be a challenge for those handling them.

    A business can compensate to some degree for not having systems and processes only because people can talk to each other in person and look over each other’s shoulders. In a virtual team, each person is at different places. It is always preferable to establish clear remote-work policies and training in advance.
    Strategizing remote work in advance can be an advantage not only for your employees but for the manager and the organization.

    In times of changing circumstances, such a level of preparation may not necessarily be feasible always. Fortunately, there are specific steps that managers can take without significant effort to improve the engagement and productivity of remote employees.

    • Implement workflow management systems for your team.
    • Try different communication mediums like email, message, video chat, phone, or webchat.
    • Allow flexible working hours.
    • Engage your remote workers daily through some communication. Use multiple channels to communicate. Then, plan a regularly scheduled, face-to-face meeting.
    • It is essential to manage expectations and stay focused on goals when embracing a remote workforce.
    • If you have a document that is being edited by many people, Google Drive is the best option. If you have a document that needs to be shared, and will not be edited simultaneously, then you can place your documents (such as an excel file) in a shared Google Drive or Dropbox.
    • Especially when there is a shift to remote work, managers need to listen to employees’ anxieties and concerns and acknowledge stress and empathize with their struggles.
