Merits and Demerits of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

    Posted on April 9, 2020

A vast number of small businesses at coworking spaces are fast adopting a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy to save a lot of time and money. However, there few opinions are still divided into the advantages and disadvantages of it.

    Merits of BYOD

Increases Productivity – Why do you carry your laptops, smartphones, and tablets to work? Because they make you feel confident and happier. They not only increase your productivity in the coworking spaces, but you can take them home to do your work at your convenience. You can regularly check your office emails when you’re at home. You can easily read and reply to emails outside your office so that things don’t have to wait until the next day or after the weekend.

Saves a Lot of Money – As an employer, you save a lot of real estate cost when you are working out of coworking spaces in Delhi. With BYOD policy you can also save in equipment for your staff. The savings here also include maintaining their devices and data plans. You don’t have to worry about wastage and breakages too, as people tend to take better care of their own devices.

Less Training – Employees bringing their own devices don’t need to be trained for using them. They can use their preferred operating system, like Apple or Windows and adapt to technology that suits them the best. Your employees tend to be more up-to-date on their own devices than the office computers that you might have bought many years ago. So, your company can easily benefit from the latest technology updates in your employees’ devices.

More Flexibility – BYOD increases flexibility in any organisation. It allows your employees to work from any location. If work could not be done in the office, your employees can do it anywhere with their devices. This actually helps you make savings on office space and electricity.

    Demerits of BYOD

Security Issues – BYOD doesn’t offer full-proof security. There’s always a worry about the security of your business data on tablets, smartphones or laptops. Since your employees have your company information stored in their devices, there’s a risk of data getting into the wrong hands. In addition to this, there are risks of malware and spoofed mobile websites that can make your business vulnerable.

Cost to Employees – It’s true that BYOD helps in reducing employers’ costs, but what about the employees? They won’t be happy to spend money on own devices for work. Repairing these devices can be a costly affair and employees won’t take responsibility to fix them when they break down.

What Happens If an Employee Leaves the Company?

It’s a common problem if your employee leaves the company, how will you terminate their access to your company data. There are chances that they give your company information to a competitor. Thus, you need to have a clear BYOD policy in your office that takes care of all these sensitive issues.

Conclusion – We have found that the Merits of BYOD outweigh demerits. BYOD is the new trend in the office and we should take advantage of this.
